In another big advance, dermatologists have learned to control allergic skin inflammation, or contact dermatitis. For 14 years, Renate Charbonneau, a hairdresser in Milwaukie, Oregon, suffered unknowingly from chemicals in acid permanent-wave solutions. They caused severe eczema on her hands. Cortisone ointment relieves the pain, she says, adding, “By avoiding the acid perms and hair that has been permed, I can still work. I love my job.”

Ms. Charbonneau’s physician, Dr. Frances Storrs, professor of dermatology at the Oregon Health Science University at Portland, heads a committee that is studying the ingredients in cosmetics for the American Academy of Dermatology. “Many substances are irritating,” says Dr. Storrs, “but allergy happens very, very rarely.” Dr. Alexander Fisher, clinical professor of dermatology at New York University, calls cosmetics far safer than they used to be.

Cancer Check

Find the early signs of melanoma on your own body and save your life. The American Cancer Society has developed a self-exam technique in which you should look for skin moles that have changed in color, size, elevation, surface, sensation, or consistency or whose surrounding skin has changed.

Dr. Darrell S. Rigel, of New York University Medical Center, has an ABCD rule, standing for asymmetry, border, color, and diameter. Melanomas tend to be irregular in shape (asymmetrical), their outlines (borders) are uneven, their colors are a mixture of browns, and their diameters are wider than a pencil eraser.

Seeing your doctor for regular checkups is also important.

The overall function of the kidneys is to maintain the normal composition and volume of the blood. This is accomplished by four interrelated activities.

(1) Wastes of metabolism are excreted. These include urea, uric acid, creatinine ammonia, sulfates and other products of metabolism, and toxic substances.

(2) The amounts of fluid and electrolytes that are reabsorbed or excreted are exactly regulated so that fluid-electrolyte balance is maintained. The antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secreted by the pituitary gland influences the amount of water that will be reabsorbed from the tubules. Aldosterone secreted by the adrenal gland controls the relative amounts of sodium that will be reabsorbed or excreted.

(3) The final adjustment in acid-base balance is made by the kidney. If there is an increased production of metabolic acids, more acid urine is secreted. Also, the kidney synthesizes ammonia which neutralizes acid so that there is less loss of base. (4) The kidney synthesizes certain enzymes and hormones. Renin is an enzyme that influences the production of aldosterone. Renin also has a powerful effect on blood pressure. Erythropoietin, a hormone produced by the kidney, stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. The kidney converts vitamin D to vitamin-D hormone. This hormone is necessary for the absorption of calcium from the intestinal tract, and for the regulation of calcium levels in the blood.

Of all the tasks of childhood, there is perhaps none that raises more anxiety for parents or causes more dread than toilet training. What should be the most natural thing in the world often turns into a dramatic struggle between parent and child. The more the parents want their child to be trained, the more he seems to resist. The inevitable peer pressure (parents’ peers, that is) adds to the tension. Difficulty in toilet training some children can sometimes be perceived as symbolizing all the difficulties that parents have in raising a child. Yet every child sooner or later acquires control over his bladder and bowels, and in retrospect parents often see that it was a largely unnecessary struggle and didn’t have to be such a big deal.

Toilet training is given a lot of emphasis by parents. There are often pressures outside the family which have the effect of raising the stakes. A kindergarten or daycare centre may have a policy of only enrolling children who are fully trained. Grandparents and relatives may in subtle and not so subtle ways suggest that young Johnnie or Sarah should be toilet trained by now, and family friends may boast that their own child, of similar age, is already toilet trained. Often it seems that the age at which the child is trained is somehow an index of the competence of the parents.

The timing of toilet training and whether it is easy or difficult depends on a combination of characteristics of both the child and the parents. The child has to be physically, neurologically and psychologically ready. This means that for most children there is little point even thinking about toilet training before about 18-24 months of age. To those prerequisites have to be added other individual factors, such as the child’s temperament and the nature of the relationship the child has with his parents. A struggle over training may be yet another episode in the lifelong battle for power and control between the child and the parents. To these factors are added parent expectations, attitudes, and parenting styles, together with their previous experience and confidence. All of these factors suggest that toilet training is very much an individual thing for each child, and it is remarkable that there is in fact reasonable consistency and predictability in the timing and staging of most children gaining control over bladder and bowels.

It is nevertheless difficult to predict for an individual child what course the toilet training will take. For some children, it seems like a non-event and everything goes very smoothly. In others, it really is a struggle for autonomy with the child resisting the very thing the parents most want. Despite the variations, most children will be mostly toilet trained by day at about 3-4 years, and at night by the time they start school. The usual course of events followed by most children is that they will achieve continence for bowels first (night then day) then daytime control over bladder function, and finally will be dry at night. There will still be accidents even after the child is supposedly trained.
Take some time first, and then consider that possibility if you think it might be helpful. As with the tubes they put in men’s penises for erection, there is no “need” to do so. Such surgery is a matter of personal and marital preference.

Almost eight out of a hundred women may have breast cancer. Men can have breast cancer, too (at a lower rate). Do a breast self-exam every month. It is a necessary part of any wellness program. If you have breast cancer, you are not alone. Having breast cancer is like having high blood pressure; you are lucky if you found it out. Those who don’t will suffer much more.

You don’t have to be like the women on television. Recently there have been many movies and specials about breast and other forms of cancer and the extraordinary courage of some persons as they face this disease.

Brief psychotherapy can be of some help if you hire the right therapist. If you feel things are moving too slowly, check Appendix II to determine when you need a therapist for sexual problems. Be careful and help the therapist focus on your problem. As one of my patients stated, “Just because I’m crazy doesn’t mean I need a lot of therapy. I would just like to fine-tune my craziness a little. This breast cancer threw me out of whack. I just need a little adjusting.”

William Masters and Virginia Johnson observed the sexual behavior of 382 women and 312 men for a total of 10,000 individual sexual-response cycles. Their courageous and pioneering work not only provided long-needed medical knowledge about sexuality, but allowed the public and medical acknowledgment that sexual problems were a part of many, if not most, sexual relationships. More important, their work provided hope for solving these problems.

The sexual-response model of Masters and Johnson maintains the “energy buildup and release” orientation of the first and second perspectivces, but divides energy buildup into excitement and plateau, and energy release into orgasm and resolution. Sex researchers have questioned this four-phase cycle, suggesting that it is far from accurate in the male response and misleading regarding the female response.

The four-phase model suggests that the refractory period, a phase during which continued genital stimulation is ineffective, even uncomfortable, applies only to men and is somehow separate from the four phases. It suggests that excitement and plateau are separate phases, an assertion that does not bear out in subjective experience. The four phases do not identify such issues as desire, interest, or satisfaction, yet problems with desire are the most frequent of sexual problems.

Masters and Johnson indicate that male and female sexual response is essentially the same. They identify the orgasmic platform, or contractions of the outer third of the vaginal barrel, and vaginal lubrication as generally equivalent to the erection of the male penis. In fact, the third perspective of sex contains a “new feminism” that seems to use the female cycle as a model or standard for the male response.
First described in 1981, there have been around 6000 cases since in the United States. Unfortunately, nearly 70 per cent of these are dead within two years.

The high risk groups in the U.S. are male homosexuals and bisexuals with multiple partners (70 per cent), intravenous drug abusers (18 per cent), Haitians (4 per cent), and haemophiliacs (1 per cent).

The cause is thought to be a virus which has a long incubation time, of maybe two to three years.

The virus seems to affect those whose immunity has already been depressed and then, in turn, part of the action of the virus is to further depress immunity. In this way, the sufferers develop infection from uncommon bacteria, fungi and yeasts. Also, unusual cancers may develop.

Unfortunately there is no effective treatment.

Prevention may be possible and this means trying to get the high-risk groups to alter their behavior. For haemophiliacs who require frequent injections of blood factors, prepared from pooled blood so as to maintain the clotting ability of the blood, the problem is one for the Blood Banks to solve.

There was a time when folks lived far from towns and doctors were few and far between. Often, in the depths of winter, isolation was made absolute by deep snow or raging floods. Sickness did not conveniently or kindly delay its visitation until these obstacles had passed. Rather, it seemed to prefer to wait until such circumstances had arrived. It was then that parent or child went down with raging fever, measles, mumps, influenza or a thoroughly sprained ankle.

The impossibility of getting a doctor demanded that those present do the best they could. Necessity being the mother of invention, there soon developed a very effective range of home treatments to which many a person owed his life. These treatments were based upon sound principles of healing, providing the body with both the opportunity and the assistance it needed to bring into full play its own healing powers. It is hard to say which was more remarkable the

speed and completeness of most recoveries, or the simplicity of the methods used. It was a drugless program of therapy—natural healing in the truest sense.

It is to the detriment of modern generations that we have allowed these skills to be lost. There is scarcely a soul today in any of the more developed societies such as Australia, America, or Europe, who are ever placed beyond the reach of medical help. Relieved of any necessity to develop a personal and individual capacity to cope with sickness, modern man has learned instead to leave his health problems in the hands of the medical world. This attitude has been further established by the baffling complexity and multiplicity of modern illnesses which he feels are, in any case, beyond his ability to deal with.

However, once again the wheel is turning full circle. Doctors have become so busy that it is difficult to secure home visitation. Also, the cost of medical treatment is becoming so astronomical as to soon discourage anybody but the wealthy from seeking help from this source. Added to this is the growing uneasiness in the minds of many as to the safety and true effectiveness of drug therapy. Just as necessity gave rise to home treatments in the first case, so it is necessity that is calling it forth again in the second case.

It must be emphasized here that this little publication is not intended to attack or disparage the medical profession. The world has been benefited by it in many ways and it has its place. This is, instead, a work intended to serve as an aid to folk who would like to become intelligent in using simple, natural home treatments to help themselves and their families while at the same time, relieving doctors of some of the tremendous burden of having to treat so many ailments which people could look after themselves.

But the advantages to be gained from the practice of these treatments in the home are more than simply a matter of convenience or financial saving. There is great character building value in them, for it is when we must draw heavily upon our own resources that we develop strength of discernment, decision, discipline, courage, and faith in God. Faith must be included here because the full potential of the body’s healing power cannot be brought into play excepting as it is connected by faith to the healing power from above. As these qualities are developed, precious character is strengthened and souls are made glad by the rewards of seeing God, nature, and the home healer all working successfully together to produce life-saving results.

It is the sincere desire of the author that the treatments and principles outlined in the following pages will bring the satisfaction of healing and character building to all who read and practice them.
One which is of delicate appearance, of reddish-brown colour and with a uniform edge, is to be regarded as normal. To enumerate the varieties of individual form and colour is beyond the scope of the present work.

Any signs in the corresponding sector of the iris should be interpreted in association with all phenomena affecting the margin of the pupil. As stated elsewhere, signs which displace or break through the iris-wreath refer to the vegetative nervous system. If such signs go out from the pupil or go through to reach the pupil, they refer to the central nervous system. Where signs relating to the organ areas extend to the pupillary margin, an edge-sign will be found. This sign differs in form and colour according to the nature of the disturbance.

One must always bear in mind that the eye represents a unity, and should be considered in its entirety. From this it follows that neither the edge of the pupil nor the peripheral margin of the iris alone can provide the basis for any diagnosis.
