MUGWORT (ARTEMISIA VULGARIS) – GENERAL INFORMATION
Apart from an essential oil and bitter substances, the herb also contains inulin, a substance similar to a carbohydrate but one that is tolerated by diabetics, unlike ordinary starch and carbohydrates. This makes it possible for the body to receive natural sugar-like substances without the need to engage the pancreas (the islets of Langerhans) in their digestion. Diabetics should take advantage of mugwort. The finely chopped leaves can be used in salads as an additional flavouring. In former days mugwort was also well known as an ingredient for stuffing geese and ducks. In fact, this is still the custom in some areas.
In cases of chronic diarrhoea, stomach or intestinal catarrh, and the widespread problem of intestinal worms, mugwort is an ideal remedy. Moreover, the fresh plant extract is one of the few effective medicines for the treatment of hystero-epilepsy, a form of falling sickness which appears to be connected with ovarian dysfunction. Mugwort is also an ingredient in Dr Zimpel’s epilepsy medicine, which is closely based on the formulae developed by Paracelsus.
Mugwort is a diuretic and also encourages the menstrual flow when it has for some reason become retarded. Five drops of the fresh plant extract in a glass of water, sipped throughout the day, will suffice for this purpose.
